Announcing 2011 Awards & Financial Aid

The Key West Literary Seminar offers three annual awards to emerging writers of exceptional merit living in the United States. The Joyce Horton Johnson Fiction Award, the Marianne Russo Award, and the Scotti Merrill Memorial Award each provide full tuition to our January Seminar and Writers' Workshop Program, round-trip airfare, seven nights' lodging, support for living expenses while in Key West, and the opportunity to appear on stage during the Seminar. <br> <br> The application window for the 2011 awards and financial assistance program is now open; complete information will be found <a href="http://www.kwls.org/lit/pages/scholarships.cfm">here</a>.

Deadline near for KWLS Awards Program

The Key West Literary Seminar offers three annual awards for emerging writers. Winners of the Joyce Horton Johnson, Marianne Russo, and Scotti Merrill prizes will receive full tuition to the Seminar and Writers' Workshop Program this January 7-14, as well as support for travel expenses to Key West and lodging and living expenses while here. Winners will also have an opportunity to appear on stage during the Seminar and present their work to an influential audience of writers, publishers, agents, and other literary professionals.

KWLS Scholar Engel Inks 2-Book Deal

We are delighted to learn that Patricia Engel has signed a two-book deal with New York-based publishing house Grove/Atlantic. The winner of our 2009 <a href="http://www.kwls.org/lit/pages/scholarships.cfm">Marianne Russo Scholarship</a>, Engel tells us to look for <em>Vida</em>, her debut collection of short stories, in the Fall of 2010. A novel, as yet untitled, will follow. 2010 Scholarship Program for Writers, Teachers, Librarians

The Key West Literary Seminar's three named scholarships- the <strong>Joyce Horton Johnson Fiction Award</strong>, the <strong>Marianne Russo Scholarship</strong>, and the <strong>Scotti Merrill Scholarship</strong>- recognize excellence in a manuscript submission from an emerging writer. Each provides full tuition to our January Seminar and Writers' Workshop Program, support for travel, lodging, and living expenses while in Key West, and an opportunity to appear on stage during the Seminar. In addition to these scholarships, we provide limited financial assistance to writers, students, teachers, and librarians who would otherwise not be able to attend the Seminar or Writers' Workshop Program.<br><br>

Scholarships Awarded to 3 Writers

We are delighted to announce the winners of our three named scholarships. Martha Otis has received the Joyce Horton Johnson Fiction Award; Patricia Engel has won the Marianne Russo Scholarship; and April Puciata has been awarded the Scotti Merrill Memorial Scholarship. <br /><br /> The annual scholarships are given by the Key West Literary Seminar to recognize excellence in a manuscript submission from a new or emerging writer. They provide full tuition to our 2009 Seminar and writers' workshop program, as well as financial support for travel, lodging, and living expenses while in Key West. We are sincerely grateful to Joyce Johnson, The Dogwood Foundation, and The Rodel Charitable Foundation-Florida for the endowments which will continue to make these scholarships possible for years to come.
